VISSLA WHOMP OFF AUSTRALIA 2018 INTERVIEW
Vissla is a brand founded in 2013 that represents creative freedom, a forward-thinking philosophy, and a generation of creators and innovators. They embrace the modern do-it-yourself attitude within surf culture, performance surfing, and craftsmanship. They also constantly strive to minimise their environmental impact and protect the oceans and waves that has raised us. In collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation, Vissla founded the Creators & Innovators Upcycle Contest which is now in its 3rd year, turning waste into want. From broken doors into handplanes and cigarette buds into surfboards. Coincidentally, in the 3rd year of the Whomp Off Australia, Vissla has taken on a major sponsorship role to help support the sport we know and love. We had a chat with Wes Berg, legendary Kelloggs Nutri-Grain Ironman and Vissla representative about all things bodysurfing.
Q. We're stoked to hear that you’re a major sponsor of this years Whomp Off Australia. Has Vissla always taken an interest in bodysurfing?
Here at Vissla we have a surf everything and ride anything mentality, And that for sure goes for bodysurfing, It’s all about being on the water as much as you can. It’s where the relationship begins with the ocean as a young grom and still to this day staying connected with the bare elements of riding waves.
Q. Bodysurfing in Australia is making a real comeback of late, what do you think is the cause of this?
I think people are becoming more in tune with their environment around them and see the amazing buzz you can get from riding body waves. After all, anyone can try it right!
Q. What do you think the future holds for bodysurfing in Australia?
It’s going to continue to grow and more crew will see how much fun it is and want to become involved with this incredible skill set of riding waves at its rawest form.
Q. Vissla have a sweet collaboration with DaFiN, how is that going?
Yeah the Da Fins co – Lab is pretty rad. We are into our third year with working with the DaFiN crew and it’s been a super cool relationship. They are always super stoked on just getting people in the water and livin it.
Q. Will Vissla be attending on the day?
We will be down to hang and watch everyone rip, ride waves and enjoy the happy vibe of everyone coming together to show of the best bodysurfing in the world. Make sure you come down for some Vissla gear which is up for grabs on the day. Stay tuned to the Whomp Off Australia Instagram page for details on how to win.
Q. There are some big names at this years event, who do you think are the ones to watch?
Mark Cunningham! He is that good in the water, it’s like he is part dolphin. I got to swim with him in the States a few months back at Salt Creek. A legend of a human and no doubt in the world of bodysurfing. But I’m also super pumped on watching the Aussies rip in.
Q. Have any bodysurfers been on your radar recently, who’s your favourite to watch?
It’s a tough call because you have small, big, open faces and hollow wave riders to pick from. But we love seeing how Nick Brbot swims and takes on the ocean. It’s like every time a big swell fills in, Nick is in the spot and throwing himself into bombs. Its epic to watch his skill and no fear.
Q. If the brand Vissla wanted to be known for one thing what would it be?
We want people to be stoked on being in the water and the products we produce for the surf community.
Vissla represents creative freedom, a forward thinking philosophy, and a generation of creators and innovators. We embrace the modern do it yourself attitude within surf culture, performance surfing and craftmanship. This is a surf everything and ride anything mentality.
